You know the old standby "tl;dr"?
Need a new one for "font too small; didn't read."
Yes, yes, one can use Cntrl++ and ?style=mine or ?for_at=light --
(Yes, I forgot and copied over the C&P. The " " troubles continue, still need new keyboard, growing less funny by the day... one sec, have to copy new "m"...)
-- but there's that instant of "ow!" when you open up a mile-long comment or a post written in a teenie-tiny itsy-bitsy microscopic font.
For driveby DW reading? Forget it. I only break for fanfic.

| Interview for a radio show. |
[Apr. 24th, 2009|07:05 am] |
ATTN: London slash writers in a movie fandom (which technically includes Harry Potter):
alex_beecroft says:
"I've just had an email from Laura Baumbach asking if I know of any movie-fandom slash writers who live in London. She has been contacted by a radio station in London, which wants to interview one."

femmequixotic? You're at the hub of the Harry Potter fandom. Know any Londoners? |

| Giant Map of Slashers. |
[Mar. 14th, 2009|06:21 pm] |
You've all seen and added yourselves (if you want) to minotaurs's Giant Map of Slasher, right?
I mean, I didn't put my address in there, but my general city? Sure. I know there are more slashers in Seattle, n'est pas?
Current efforts: working on papers. I'll have to switch from my hardest paper to the easier one. I'm getting bogged down on the painfully difficult one. |

[Mar. 4th, 2009|10:59 am] |
Racewank is still going on. Huh.
I still crack up when someone wants to call it an "imbroglio." Ah, euphemisms.
In other news: I'm staying home to work on that essay I thought was due March 17th.
Sigh. I should have switched the grading on this class to Pass/Fail last week. Then I could focus on classes that are important to me, like Asian history and Sanskrit, rather than my absolutely dreadful Greek history class. |

Began my first ever friendslist clean-up.
You would not believe the number of journals on my f-list that hadn't been updated since 2004. Some were completely empty. I used to friend everyone back and hit my friendslimit about a year ago.
If I deleted you in error, please let me know. I have a new fandom and am just trying to make some room in the cupboards, reorganize a space that had grown too small. |

| And the banana peel award goes to.... |
[Nov. 19th, 2008|10:11 pm] |
A banana in my backpack plus large, heavy books = not a good idea.
Who knew?
If people wrote fanfic about my life, well, these would be the sort of deep, meaningful lessons I learn. I like to think that John Sheppard does stupid things like this all the time, and only once he's with Rodney does anyone find out that, yes, John will put his shoes directly in front of the door and then trip over them.
There must be fic. Entitled "Could Have Been In Mensa."
Archive News, and my, that sounds official
In other, less squishy, news: I'm uploading my fic to the beta version of AAOOO (An Archive Of Our Own).
The tagging feature, when carefully thought out, is very, very cool. It will make finding exactly what you want so much easier.
For example, I have 18 stories uploaded so far.
If you remember a story that involves, say, sex toys, you go to my page, click Tags off to the right there, and then click the "sex toy" filter.
"Sex toy" brings up two stories, Bacchanalian Circuit (SGA) and Lost in the Temple of Law (SPN).
Now if you want to read someone else's "sex toy" centric fics, you click on the tag "sex toy." That brings up my two stories, plus two by Kass.
Nifty.
Let me know if my tags work for you. This is to save you trouble later on, make it easy for you to find what you want, and help create a base of solid, (correctly spelled!), carefully considered tags for everyone. |

I've got a new spammer. This one, amusingly, is pro-Fanlib. Or pro-former Fanlib would be the better term.
If you'd like to block this person as well, the names used so far are:

lincolnmerrick
dylanmilaney
Here's a link to the admin console. Just type in: Ban_set [fill in user name here] |

Personally, I enjoy doom and gloom if I happen to be right. /Snape-voice
But the normal people on my friendslist might enjoy a break from all the, hmm, political excitement. You are therefore invited to play in the Multifandom Bailout Challenge.
As very_improbable describes it: Yes, future historians, we *did* turn a global economic crisis into a fanfic challenge.
And we should be proud. |

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I'll give you either:
(a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon, (b) a reason he/she sucks, (c) a reason he/she is awesomecakes, (d) five things that never happened to that character, or (e) five people that character never fell in love with and why.
You pick the character. I pick the letter.
I'll play in any fandom I've written in.
And now... to make obscure Indian recipe while WG's out of the house. The trouble with having a man who cooks (and trust me, I'm not complaining) is that he tends to critique your cooking. "Honey, you should turn that down. Um. Aren't you adding that a little early-? Okay, okay, I'll leave you be!" |

| Socialness. Or not. |
[Mar. 8th, 2008|03:05 pm] |
*growls* One of the astrology sites I was cruising this week dropped a trojan on my system and not the good kind that come in little black wrappers. Either that or wildernessguru hit an adult site. My online cruising habits are fairly predictable and the astrology sites were the only thing different I've done this week. It was fun to see my virus control kill it. *stomp, stomp, stomp*
Icarus was sociable last night. Breaking a long-term habit of reclusiveness (particularly where fandom is concerned) Icarus actually... went out. With HP fen. One new fanfic writer (hi, thelovesupreme) and one long-term Anime mainstay (hello, katmaxwell *beams*).
The Ave is odd at night. Like visiting a foreign culture, watching 20-year-olds hang out and chat. I felt... very 40. Bear in mind that I've done the following types of "social events":
( Oh, joy. )
Tonight, I'm being pried out of the house for a kick-boxing event with WG's coworkers.
I have two novels to read, a site visit, and two essays to write by Monday. *frets* |

I can't remember who I got this from, but I'm always happy to help out a grad student:
A master's student at Georgetown is working on fan fiction for her thesis. There's a survey and she needs as many people from as many fandoms as possible to complete it so that the diversity of fan culture is represented.
If you have a minute, please check it out and send the link to your friends. The survey can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=1idSovixsYIF7EpKO2EGpQ_3d_3d .
I've agreed to help spread the word, but if you have any questions/concerns, you can email her at kem82 @ georgetown.edu. |

Even though I goofed, you can bid on people like synecdochic or thefourthvine or tripoli8. So go forth, and bid. I'll see if I can not-forget next time. |

| Oh, thank you Setissma: how to avoid having your f-list think thoughts of black death at you. |

Setissma gives advice on how to not drive your flist and community members crazy with your aqua fonts and not-so-cool-as-you-think custom layouts.
I admit, when I see a community post in a fancy font with pretty, pretty colors, I automatically don't read it. It's the skim signal.
I'm biased. I assume whoever wrote it is a fool, or else very, very young. I assume (probably incorrectly) that their stories are equally immature.
When I go to someone's LJ and their custom layout is unreadable, I will assume they just don't know what they're doing. This doesn't surprise me because I can't do custom layouts. It's easy for me to imagine incompetence in this arena. Most of the time if ?style=mine or ?format=light doesn't work, I just Back-button but every now and then I'll leave a comment to say "Hello. You may not realize this but yellow in a 4 pt font is hard to read. You might want to fix that."
Most people have been nice about it, though I've never seen the layout change, largely because I never go back. |

I want to tell you (that means you) how great you all are.
When I'm whining and tearing my hair out about school, life, my miserable family ... you're all there with a pat on the back, a word of encouragement, large cans of spinach delivered by Sam Winchester -- it helps.
When I'm desperately seeking a beta on a fanfic, or an opinion on an essay ... you're all there, ready to help, to offer opinions and suggestions -- you're invaluable.
When I'm bored, or my mind freezes from overwork, or I'm just tired and procrastinating ... you're all there, posting away, telling your entertaining stories about your lives, about fandom. You offer stories, recs, reviews, meta -- and you're all so interesting.
Posting comments is agonizingly slow on dial-up so I lurk more than I reply, but I want to say how much I enjoy the voyeuristic thrill of glimpses into your lives, you're endless creativity -- you guys are really cool.
I know this is a bit superstitious and "New Age-y" of me, but deep down, I think my life improves just when you're pulling for me. I can't tell if it's an absurd illogical view of karma I have, or if it's just that you make me see things differently. But whatever it is -- you help.
So. I don't know what to do except to offer brownies ("brownies") and Christmas cookies ("cookies") and post stories and stuff, just to say thank you. |
