Recs, recs, recs and more recs. [Apr. 19th, 2009|10:49 am]

[Current Mood | working]

In better news: WG's foot is doing better. Not "all healed" by any means. But he's moving around much more freely.

Also: various transition scenes of Out Of Bounds are moving forward. In an odd way. First one scene inches forward. Grinds to a halt. Then another starts moving. I scratch my head, but there is no arguing with it. Progress is progress. When not progressing, I re-read [info]crysothemis's Fix. *fans self*

Nothing makes me happier than when someone on [info]sgastoryfinders searches for a fic of mine. It's even better when its recognized in seconds. The fact that [info]auburnnothenna is writing a (massively long) SGA AU right now comes a close second, however.

Grave Mistake by [info]kick_flaw, Merlin/Arthue, NC-17, H for hilarious (I made that rating up)

Yes, that [info]kick_flaw, of the infamously hot Harry/Draco "Ice Cream Quickie." You've laughed yourself silly over Grave Mistake already, I'm sure. But if you've missed this one, stop by to enjoy the funniest ghost overshare in the Merlin fandom. Is there a way to gag a ghost? No. If there were, I'm quite certain Merlin would have found it. A fantastic, imaginative premise.

Sheppard's Law by [info]cesperanza, John/Rodney, can't remember if it's R or NC-17, B for brilliant

I realize I've been remiss, but only because I know you've all pounced on it already. Speaking of imagination... just when I thought I'd read every possible sci-fi scenario, [info]cesperanza comes up with a variation on time travel (but not time travel) that I'd never encountered. We all know that John is accident prone, but here are heart-in-your-throat dire. It left my brain buzzing with the implications, wondering about the nature of time. A sci-fi gem

Fix by [info]toft_froggy, John/Rodney, NC-17, T for torturous

[info]vanitashaze and I were discussing [info]toft_froggy's unsparing eye the other day, and lo, [info]sgastoryfinders reacquainted me with Fix. John is in the most humiliating position possible for a man, and only Rodney can save him. Seriously dub!con. Does a miserable, frustrated, unwilling Sheppard turn you on? Yeah. Me, too.

As soon I can find the link, I will give you [info]vanitashaze's story, and [info]toft_froggy's disturbing but so dead-on Merlin/Uther fic. Toft doesn't make her stories easy to find... grumble, grumble.

Hi, Merlin fans, yes, I'm still here. [Apr. 17th, 2009|12:54 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

I'm still here, in the Merlin fandom. I'm being very disciplined about finishing my SGA WiPs first.

Quite disciplined. I deserve a prize.

However, none is forthcoming. Instead I shall remind you all I'm still a Merlin fan with a rec or two:

Needlework by [info]zarathuse, Merlin/Arthur, NC-17

Needlework will make you shiver, in that beaming way that comes with a good story told over a campfire, snuggled in your sleeping bag. Let's face it, most Merlin fics use "magical misadventure" as a mere ploy to get Merlin and Arthur into the sack. (Not that I don't enjoy that, too.) Here, I believe the medieval magic. I was utterly involved in the plot, almost confident that all would be well, eventually. Almost. Merlin was so clearly over his head.... At the end, [info]zarathuse gives us far more than just the start of a relationship. But I won't spoil that for you. Toasted marshmallow, anyone?

But hey, I'm also devouring SGA fic, rumors of SGA's demise being greatly exaggerated, etc., etc.. After some hibernation, the SGA authors are putting out nice, long rich fics:

Should've Been My Girlfriend by [info]crysothemis, John/Rodney, NC-17

... Like this meta-rich story. I can see John just this foolish, just this absorbed in one thought -- we've known for some time he can be obsessive -- and nothing goes as planned. In fact, Crys bounces off the gender tropes like billiard ball from unexpected turn to another. And need I mention that it's hot? It's written by [info]crysothemis after all, and she wrote Fix, which is my candidate for the hottest fic in the fandom. The best part of "Girlfriend" (other than John's utter foolishness -- I mean, the fool!) is that Crys does what she does best: inner monologues in a note-perfect character voice, and the contrast with the total lack of communication between John and Rodney. Oh, John. Never change.

SGA rec: I don't usually go for Mensa AUs or Het. And yet.... [Jan. 11th, 2009|06:30 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | wiped]
[Current Music |E.S. Posthumus - Harappa]

I don't usually go for Mensa AUs or Het.

I've now read [info]mad_maudlin's Heteronormativity, Gender Construction and Nonverbal Signaling in Intercultural Communication: A Comedy twice.

I think I'm in love with this neurotic, understandably screwed up Sheppard who never developed our John's veneer of cool or learned to hide the fact he was an uber geek. He's fully aware that he's different and screwed up, and openly admits, "I don't do people. I do math." I think she had me with:

John offered her his hand. "Hi. Dr. John Sheppard. I like football, Ferris wheels and anything with an explosive yield over two hundred kilotons."

Yet underneath his neurosis, Dr. John Sheppard is somehow sweeter than ours, maybe because he never learned to kill. And I believe why Teyla in the Mensa universe is uncommunicative: she was a runner, not Ronon.

With such a meaty core, you'd never think this is mad fun. But this is [info]mad_maudlin, so it has spit-take lines like, "For your information, Colonel," he declared, "I am getting a little bit tired of being called a lady by somebody who is currently knitting a cowl-neck poncho out of hot pink Fun Fur!" and "Well, it might help to start by explaining what the squirrels that power your brain were doing during the whole adventure."

Run, don't walk, to Heteronormativity, Gender Construction and Nonverbal Signaling in Intercultural Communication: A Comedy by [info]mad_maudlin, John/Teyla (yes, you read that right, and this is exactly the second time I've ever recc'd het), PG-13.

Merlin renewed! Out Of Bounds longer! SGA Santa fic good! [Dec. 17th, 2008|09:11 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Music |bing crosby - the twelve day of christmas]

Per the very helpful and cheering [info]tty63:

Merlin has been renewed for a second season!

Woo!

In other news, Out Of Bounds paused briefly for WG's snow day (how can one man be so distracting?) and my, cough, need to write my [info]sga_santa fic. Which is done and turned in.

I'm being so good -- the Sectionals freeskate is turning out much longer than I expected -- that I'm not even reading When You Know You Were Born To Fly. You guys should run over there and read it for me, okay?

Stargate Atlantis recs: Woolsey and kiddies. [Nov. 6th, 2008|01:36 am]
[Tags|, ]

Two great SGA stories:

by [info]ladyflowdi, John, Rodney, so PG, so cute.

Watch this turn into a mega-fic. Rodney is de-aged, and wait, although it's adorable, it's not saccharine. [info]ladyflowdi finds the idea of baby Rodney very, very scary. I particularly love little Rodney's repeated insistance that he's important because "I know numbers!"

Mr Woolsey's Guide to Etiquette in the Pegasus Galaxy by [info]busaikko, John/Woolsey, R

This is a fascinating slow-build look at an unpredictable pairing. Woolsey's dignified, cautious voice is what makes this story work. And the pairing does work. I can see now how unobtrusive and undemanding Woolsey would be for John, a bit of understated calm and elegance in the turmoil of John's life. Cut for potential spoiler ) I know, I know, you only want to read John/Rodney. Just trust me. Oh, and be sure to download at least the first song on soundtrack (the theme from Master & Commander).

SGA Big Bang Recs [Aug. 21st, 2008|01:30 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | awake]

Everyone heard the news about Stargate Atlantis.

I have gifts for you. Or rather, the [info]sgabigbang has gifts for you.

SGA Big Bang Recs.

The Price That Life Extracts by [info]cathalin. John/Rodney, NC-17.
Wow. Just wow. Cathalin hands us an ever-so-plausible, you'd never imagine it in a million years, angst-ridden situation, then gives us no easy answers. She balances the angst with... kidfic. But kidfic that doesn't pretend that people can't wait to have their lives unexpectedly taken over by a child. I learned from this story the reasons why, although I love kidfic, there's always a voice in the back of my mind waving the "hey waitaminute" flag. Cathalin shows us how Rodney would really react, with the honesty of [info]busaikko's A Hundred Happy Things. In this smart, thoughtful, heart-wrenching fic nothing goes easily or well, and yet the way John and Rodney know each other is what gets them through. Contains the hottest sex scene in the Big Bang so far.

See No Evil by [info]greyias. John, Rodney friendship. Gen. PG-13.
Great, balls out action. Is this what SGA Gen is like? Have I been missing some great fics? Greyias is one hell of a writer. Her John and Rodney are burst out laughing funny. In this AU where they work for a military contractor, their friendship does not parallel canon, and builds completely differently. Only these two could turn mutual harrassment into high art and become friends in the process. I believe (and love) John on his motorcycle. Enjoyable banter, digs at corporations (that I could truly appreciate), and a gripping plot whose pacing reminded me of Tom Clancy at his best. There are only a few writers in fandom who write action this well ([info]ltlj comes to mind) and I'm happy to add Greyias to the list. Not slash (except in my mind) but this kind of tight friendship and mutual sacrifice is why we see the slash in the first place.

A Clear And Different Light by [info]friendshipper and [info]naye. John/Rodney. PG-13.
I know I recced this already, but in case you missed it: this is a creative, delicately beautiful fantasy story. It is as light as fairy wings, touches canon only occasionally, using it as a jumping off point. John is one of the Fae, who aren't exactly popular back on Earth. Rodney speaks to whales and is researching whale math on Atlantis. Ronon, like all Satedans, has wings. Teyla works the runes and magic of the Athosians. And the Wraith in this incarnation are eerie. This is slash, but at core, A Clear And Different Light is an effective team fic that left mr with the upbeat happy feeling of my favorite fantasy novels.

Life After by [info]velocitygrass. John/Rodney. NC-17.
Life After is destined to be a guilty pleasure of mine. I confess, I felt it had way too much exposition as it brushed quickly over the plot. But it lights up my happy buttons. Which is weird, considering the plot. Yet the plot is largely an excuse to bring John and Rodney together in a way we never get to see in either canon or fanon (I brushed quickly over it to get to the JohnandRodney). That pesky DADT is always in the way. Even when it's gone, there's a level of secrecy that precludes an unabashed romance. But here, oh here, they have it all. There is cuddling. With a side helping of my favorite obliviousness. I'll be at the table, eating it up with a spoon.

The Fall of the House of Sheppard by [info]saffronhouse. John/Rodney, non-con, NC-17.
No, not perfect. The non-con scene is gratuitous but, then again, would it be Martha if it didn't have non-con? Of course not. The ending has a plot tunnel. But never mind that. This story has the atmosphere of a great Supernatural episode. There's just something truly inspired about Martha's taking John's wealthy background and ditching the glitz. Usually John's portrayed as the black sheep in a white sheep family and the question asked is why would he leave "all that" behind? Here, you wonder how John turned out so normal. Boy, anyone would run. Martha just nails the way a kid who grows up in a bizarre environment handles the strange with aplomb, barely a blink.

The Water Grinds The Stone by [info]auburnnothenna. John/Rodney, NC-17.
As I read this story, I kept imagining myself as a publisher, reading this submitted manuscript. My conclusion: this massive 242,740 word piece isn't a novel. No. It's the first draft of a trilogy. There are, approximately, three separate books here, and since they've been condensed (yes, condensed) into just 250k words, you can expect too much exposition. In my mind, I made my notes to the author where the three books might be split up, asked the author questions to draw out more complexity in her bad guys, rearranged the books to start at or near the off-world trip to Akanital -- and re-read those amazing off-world scenes, the details (a candy bar dug out of a pack is smushed and melted), the world-building that accounted for the unexpected changes post-declassification. And I found myself unable to shrug off the lingering spell of the intense, star-crossed, galaxy-spanning love affair between John and Rodney. Then I optioned all three books for that last aspect alone.

A Clear and Different Light [info]friendshipper and [info]naye, John/Rodney, a very gentle PG-13

Strange, beautiful, and so AU it's utterly different and therefore unpredictable. Ronon has wings (like all Satedans), Rodney speaks to whales and is learning whale math, John is one of the Fae. And the Wraith, too, are strange, different, and I think scarier in this incarnation. In a way, it reminds me of the unpredictable of [info]steammmpunk's artwork:

Happiness? Happiness. [Jul. 18th, 2008|01:14 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | hopeful]

This must be what it's like to be a bit of milkweed, delicately dancing on the breeze.

The weather has been pristine. 70 degrees. Clear blue skies. The mountains still snow-capped even this late.

I love my summer classes, focusing on just one subject all summer long.

My job is great. I'm a little tired after class and I need to do better about actual eating, but the relaxed atmosphere of the tutor center is like that of a resort town on the off-season. We tutor. Then we do pretty much whatever we want. And I'm working with two fanfic writers who are both very cool.

[info]wildernessguru and I are absurdly happy. The cat is fluffy.

All right, whoever ordered up all this happiness, may I tack on a hot fudge sundae? Because that's really all that's missing.

For your enjoyment:

Last Place You Look by [info]thingswithwings, John/Rodney, NC-17
Summary: Hardcore BDSM, that's easy. Hickeys, though. Hickeys are hard. For [info]kink_bingo.

Steamy, with a fetish I've never considered. Naturally, [info]thingswithwings makes it hot, but also... so personal.

The Old Familiar Sting by [info]perfica, John/Rodney, PG-13
Summary: I know I said I'd write a drabble, but the story got away from me! Hope you don't mind a bit of angst.

What [info]perfica calls angst, I call gentle and deeply touching. Wonderful Outcast tag.

Haven't done this in a while:

A Hundred Happy Things by [info]busaikko, John/Rodney, NC-17
Summary: Harlequin AU (no Stargate). Kaleb's long gone, Jeannie's got a career, Madison has problems, Rodney's got Inner Power! and Sheppard.. . is pretty much the same.

A beautifully complex clear-eyed treatment of the subject matter.. annnd I'm not going to give away the big spoiler (although I highlighted it for myself and it was a selling point). John, Rodney, Jeannie, even Madison are totally imperfect, and you accept them as they are. We love them for all their flaws. In a very subtle blend, [info]busaikko has treated the same theme from four different angles, so by the time you get to John, you can see why Rodney's acceptance level is very, very high. Rodney's accepted a lot in his life and he brings the reader with him. Oh, and Maddie isn't even remotely the perfect angel-child. Not even close. Best of all, [info]busaikko dialogue and Rodney's inner monologue has snap and is unpredictable.

Thanks to <lj user="sardonicsmiley">'s version of Rodney as Iron Man drew me in, and now I'm hooked on her work (blame <lj user="dossier">). I have never heard of this Disney movie, and the whole thing should be absurd (I have a feeling the movie is) but... I found myself drawn into this high school world, the way I could stop watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off: weird, yet so familier. Her characterization of John and Rodney (as well as Teyla) are compelling, and just like her Iron Man fic, I found myself buying it. <lj user="sardonicsmiley"> is one of those author's in fandom who has a knack for action. Don't think for one second this isn't a WIP. But the second novella is already in the works and is being regularly updated.

I had this whiney post, see.... [Jan. 2nd, 2008|07:17 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | gloating]

I had this really whiney post that I decided to save as private. (You're welcome.) Instead, you get this:

I had frothy cocoa in an Ethiopian restaurant tonight.

On the way there I had two fanfic ideas. One has John throwing a can of tomatoes at Rodney, while Rodney ducks and says, "Are you crazy!? You could have hit me!" John storms out the door. Comes back for his jacket. Then leaves again, "before I commit justifiable homicide."

The other, in a completely different story, has John explaining to Carson that since women in the Pegasus galaxy are not into prophylactics ("It's pretty much a deal breaker") he doesn't "bring it home." Naturally, Carson doesn't get what he means. So John says he doesn't "go all the way." And Carson gets it. "Ooooh... coitus interruptus. But that's not one hundred percent effective." Since they're discussing a baby with John's DNA, John says, "Thank you. I'm aware of that."

My date didn't show (a good thing since I'm a plague carrier at the moment -- [info]wildernessguru is very, very sick), so after writing these two down on the back of a receipt, I asked for the check. The waitress brushed it off and said I could pay them when I came in next time. I pressed them, but no, no, next time, they insisted. Okay.

I walked home, fanfic burning a whole my pocket.

It was dark and the sidewalks were shiny with streetlight. The park I cross through has gold globes on sticks and so the light is golden.

I passed a guy walking two dachshunds, his arms stretched in opposite directions. The plump one (and this doggie was fat) wanted to go forward. The skinny dog was back the other way, sniffing a tree. I laughed and told him, "Good thing they're small." I didn't hear what he said, but I got the impression that they were still doing a good job of snapping him like a rubber band.

I shall inform you all that, if you like delicate flavor, you should definitely try white tea. Even if, like me, you're having it with a sandwich. ([info]enname, this reminds me of your post on Japanese incense. It could be the subtlety. Subtle tea?

Oh, and before I forget to gloat:

GloatGloatGloatGloatGloat.

I was right. [info]argosy wrote One Piece At A Time which, if you haven't read it yet, how foolish of you. The fic written for me (mine, mine, all mine!) was the best of the [info]sga_santa. Don't believe me? Count the comments and believe everyone else.

And for more gloatability, I was right that the excellent They Might Be Giants was by [info]auburnnothenna (okay, I may have second-guessed myself and decided she'd beta'd the fic for [info]eretria, but my first guess was right). I'm two for two. Ka-ching! gloatgloatgloat..../small>

Psst. See my new icon? It's by [info]monanotlisa. *flaunts*

Christmas pressies for you. SGA rec. [Dec. 24th, 2007|03:03 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | joyous]
[Current Music |Hal Mooney and his Orchestra - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy]

Working on that Christmas scene for Out Of Bounds, a little thank you to the readers. And I had to explain Rodney's top hat somehow.

I've wrapped [info]wildernessguru's pressies though I've yet to decorate the tree. Yes, that's my job, no, he's only wants to hang tinsel which is a-okay with me. I'll have to disappear for a time (grocery shopping) while he wraps presentses.

In the meantime, you have to check out the incredible [info]sga_santa fic written for me.

Title: One Piece At A Time
Author: Santa
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Rating: PG
Recipient: </a></b></a>[info]icarusancalion
Spoilers: All four seasons.
Summary: If one more scientist reported to work with that vaguely manic gleam in his eye, and the phrase "workbench jig" under his breath, Rodney was going to have to ban visits to Sheppard's little playground.

Author's Note: For Icarus, who asked for John and airplanes. Title from Johnny Cash. Thank you so much to </a></b></a>[info]lunasky and </a></b></a>[info]sheafrotherdon for betas. Big extra special thanks to </a></b></a>[info]lunasky for hand-holding, inspiration, and beautiful manip!

( Sheppard was using the Tone of Extreme Patience. That usually came right before the eye tick. )

I love this story. It has aircraft, the author took the time to research how an airplane is built, gets the tools, the steps, then interweaves John and Rodney's slowly building relationship (did I mention that I adore clueless!Rodney?), has realistic action -- and wonderful, thoughtful observations about John Sheppard. Personally -- not that I'm biased or anything -- I think it's the best story in [info]sga_santa. Whoever wrote it... wow. Thank you.

Also, [info]lunasky, I love that photomanip. And I'm a photomanip snob.

Some of my favorite SGA fics so far this year. [Nov. 18th, 2007|06:32 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | cheerful]

More presents for everyone. Some of my favorite SGA stories this year:

Unidentified by [info]fiercelydreamed R. John/Rodney.
[Unknown LJ tag]Without a doubt "Unidentified," an AU that takes place with SGA characters who met in college instead of in the Stargate program, is the story of the year. What an amazing, powerful, beautiful, poetic read. I'm not a fan of amnesia fics. I can take them or leave them. But here [info]fiercelydreamed built on the understanding that amnesia isn't about Rodney's past, recovering his memories and returning him to who he was, but discovering who he is without his memories. Without the trauma, without whatever had made him the sarcastic, rude, rather bitter man whom you love anyway for his raw, vulnerable honesty. She reveals the traits fundamental to his personality: his wonder, his obsessiveness, and his powerful intellect.

As if that insight alone weren't enough, she slowly adds, in small doses, what John knows of Rodney's recent past, their history together, and what Rodney's memory loss means to John – both good and bad – and then there's the incredible scene where John is kicked out of the military. It would be excruciating (if still bittersweet) without [info]fiercelydreamed's gorgeous writing. Better yet, the story is tightly structured, honed, giving you no more than you absolutely need to know.

Then we have that final scene where you learn Rodney's last act before he lost his memory, and the whole story is turned on its end and you know the truth. I don't cry at stories. But she got me with the sheer joy of it.

All this would be enough to make this the finest story of the year – and I say this in confidence in August. Not a chance anyone's going to surpass this. But as if that weren't enough, then there's [info]fiercelydreamed's beautiful prose:

In late spring, L.A. to Chicago is a high bright daydream. Eight and a half miles of air lie between the wings of John's Learjet and the rumpled fabric of the continent below him, its crude patchwork of golds and greens. An apple dropped out the window would take four and a half minutes to reach the ground. In the stratosphere, numbers sing in John's head like a symphony: the soaring strings of the gracious tailwind, the solid gold horns of air parting around the wings, the thick timpani boom of turbulence. With his hands on the controls and the sun streaming through the windshield, John understands Newton, Einstein. He thinks he understands Icarus, climbing recklessly upward: joyful, burning, calling hallelujah as the wax melted away. Chasing last every second of it, even that final fall.

He loses something when the wheels touch down.

[info]fiercelydreamed, I envy you this story, and applaud, breathless.</lj>

The New Atlantean Dictionary of Literary Terms by [info]thingswithwings NC-17. Various.
[Unknown LJ tag]The first time I tried to read this, I shut it down. Not because I didn't like it but because I just didn't have time for what was obviously a complicated story.

Now I'm glad I've had time to get back to it because – who knew someone wrote the Canterbury Tales for SGA? Okay, it's not Canterbury Tales and bears no resemblance to those stories, save (like Chaucer) some parts are better than others. Yet it has that feel of meandering adventure where you never know if you're going to find a comic piece (that bit with Cadman and Simpson getting themselves into hot water, hee), or something gentle and heartwarming (Ronon and Zelenka telling each other weird Satedan and Czech folktales over a campfire), or – this is fandom after all – incredibly hot strap-on sex. Eventually all the threads interlace and come neatly together. I fully expected the John/Rodney to be the jewel of the story, even knowing as I went in that everyone hooks up in the strangest of ways (hot, lesbian Teyla/Heightmeyer, anyone?). But Lorne/Cadman? Okay, those two steal the show. </lj>

Fix by [info]crysothemis NC-17. John/Rodney.
[Unknown LJ tag]The hottest story so far this year (but I leave room for more, so try hard, all of you). Holy cow. It helps that dubious consent is a bulletproof kink of mine, and wow, while Sheppard went into this willingly, he certainly didn't know the cost. Even hotter, Rodney isn't exactly on board either. John Sheppard finds a room in Atlantis that only he can open and it leads to a dangerous addiction. As they're forced into an uncomfortable sexual relationship you realize what a total and complete disconnect there is between the two of them. Rodney really has no clue what's going on in John's mind, and John can't read Rodney at all.

More than just the hottest story so far this year, it's a refreshing take on John/Rodney (usually portrayed as an easy understanding relationship). What an interesting observation, that they can be close while coming from such different perspectives they misread each other all the time.

She's written the same story from two points of view – for which I'm grateful, since there's so much the other doesn't know. The order that was recommended to me (and the order in which they were written according Crys) is Rodney's POV first, then Sheppard's. The reveal is slower that way and oh, so much better.</lj>

Junk Cheap by [info]devildoll R. John/Rodney.
[Unknown LJ tag]Junk Cheap is an AU written in the classic loose style of first season SGA fanfic: casual, playful, devil-may-care, with a gleeful disregard for canon. Rodney's a professor having to scramble for lodgings at the last moment who ends up in a second-rate building populated with retirees. John's the slacker who runs a junk shop downstairs. We all know they're going to end up together, and it's amusing to watch Rodney's low opinion of John slowly shift as they fumble towards a relationship. Altogether enjoyable. You will probably look up some classic first season fics at the end. </lj>

The Checkmate series by [info]beadattitude most G, moves up to R/NC-17. John/Rodney.
[Unknown LJ tag]Sweet, sweet, sweet. Do you love cats? Do you love John? Do you love the fact that Rodney loves cats? Do you know for a fact that Rodney loves John? Then you have all the prerequisites for this story where John, in an offworld Ritual with Ancient Technology, ends up getting turned into a cat while his mind remains intact. Thank goodness Rodney knows cats better than anyone, eh? It was written by someone who obviously knows cats and her John-as-cat is perfect (see how I avoided the obvious pun? You would never have forgiven me otherwise). Bead captures cat-human communication, the vulnerability of John in his sleek (but little!) feline form, and her scenes left me grinning. John with a dingle ball, anyone? A shredded Ronon? A cat playing chess with Zelenka? The story is a little frustrating in its current form, with scenes posted out of order (best to select the tag and read them all), but hey, it's not like it's an action/adventure where the order matters all that much. I look forward to when Bead polishes the story, but in the meantime, it's too much fun to wait.</lj>

Always Should Be Someone You Really Love by [info]thingswithwings NC-17. John/Rodney.
[Unknown LJ tag]By rights, with a name like that, this story should kill you with schmoop, drown you in syrup. Don't run. It's quite the opposite. This is a powerful tribute to the late Dr. Carson Beckett that deals head on with his loss. Rodney, at Carson's posthumous request, is assigned the job of informing Carson's mother of his death. Since Rodney's not known for his tact and diplomacy John goes with him. What follows is a rich description of Carson's large, nutty -- yet strikingly normal in their quirks -- family. His mother is marvelous, I can't imagine Carson crossing her often, and if you don't want to periodically hug and then strangle his sisters you're made of tougher stuff than I am.

[info]thingswithwings understands loss. How ordinary life continues in a surreal sort of way while the rug's been pulled out from under you. The way you have to continue with silly details -- hotel reservations, rentals, buy flowers, we're out of toilet paper -- as if everything were normal, even while those silly details seem staggeringly unimportant. John and Rodney, in the midst of coping with the Beckett clan, have their own ways of mourning. John's locked up as tight as a drum while Rodney... is Rodney. In the end they prop each other up. The story acts as an epitaph and fandom commentary: so long as the Stargate Atlantis fans still have John and Rodney, they can deal.</lj>

[Bad username: http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/581973.html]Inundation</a> by [info]ltlj PG-13. Gen.
[Unknown LJ tag]Classic Stargate team sci-fi. John's team, with a bunch of scientists, get caught in a flood off-world. Yes, there's danger and excitement and tension, but you never doubt too much that they'll be rescued. The story was written for a [info]sga_flashfic challenge and the world [info]ltlj describes is magnificent. You're left with a sense of wonder. There's a little hint of meta here, too, noticing and explaining why, although the worlds SG-1 visits are different from each other, the ones in the Pegasus galaxy all tend to look the same.</lj>

Weapons of Some Distraction by [info]shrift NC-17. John/Rodney
[Unknown LJ tag]There's an entire sub-genre of stories about John and Rodney on Earth when the Atlantis team was kicked off Atlantis by the Ancients. The common threads: a) they are bored, bored, bored, and b) they keep in touch, and keep each other entertained. Beyond that the details vary. Here [info]shrift reminds us that, yes, John and Rodney are twelve. Yes, they can subsist on the four food groups: pizza, Pepsi, beer, and take out. Yes, Rodney's idea of making John buy things for his apartment consists largely of toys. They're such boys, in fact, that it's almost surprising they get around to anything as adult as sex. What's amazing is there's no tectonic shift, no romance – John and Rodney just continue, the same as ever.</lj>

While You Were Out by [info]mad_maudlin PG-13. Gen.
[Unknown LJ tag]Good morning, John Sheppard! Do we have news for you. I won't tell you the messages John receives after waking up from a serious injury (that would spoil the fun) but there were a few changes while he was out. His first clue: Rodney's manic exhausted grin. [info]mad_maudlin is howlingly funny. (My favorite part is Caldwell. Hee.)</lj>

Catch-19 by [info]mmmchelle NC-17. John/Rodney.
[Unknown LJ tag]I looked forward to learning the name of the author, and I should not have been surprised. The IOA decides to yank John from the Atlantis mission – nothing personal, they're just don't trust the U.S. military. Rodney concocts a cockamamie plan to solve this: John should marry someone from another country that the IOA will accept. Elizabeth suggests Canada as a top candidate. Yes, you know what's coming. John won't use a woman like that (or set himself up for another divorce) so they decide he'll marry... Rodney. In a delightful inversion of the marriage trope, John and Rodney never take this bullshit wedding seriously for a second. They mock wedding traditions, want to use the vows from Spaceballs, and are completely on the same page – even if their friendship turns out to be a little deeper than they suspected. The scenes with Woolsey in particular are priceless.</lj>

When Nothing's Left To Burn by [info]auburnnothenna NC-17. John/Vala.
[Unknown LJ tag]A story so hot, it's branded on my mind, months later. Mission sex, passionate and intense, these two are amazing together. But it's never going to have any meaning for either of them, oh no, of course not. Told through the lens of Vala's flippant narcissism and quirky sense of humor, tragedy takes on an ironic glow. There's something about the wake John Sheppard cuts through people's lives that makes them also choose to be self-sacrificing. It's like he gives them no choice.
