| Cliffhanger, eh? |
[May. 15th, 2009|09:33 am] |
So I take it from you guys (I have not watched yet) that SPN ended on a cliffhanger?
Is that true? Because I'm perfectly prepared to wait till September to watch the most recent ep.
In other news... monte kitty (currently age nine) keeps doing this butt-shifting thing when he sits down, like he has to work to get comfortable. He's getting older. Our cat Trigger used to do this and he had arthritis in his hips. What do think? Kitty arthritis? I'm worrying too much? |

Gacked from torakowalski: Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence!
1. "Ah, good." Rodney snatched away one of the buckets and padded barefoot to the bathroom. Several other buckets of ice were lined up on the tile. "I waited to run the bath." He turned the cold water on full.
2. Based on dad's journal he'd narrowed the possibilities to a curse, possession (which he quickly disproved), the influence of a demigod, or a complete mental breakdown on Dean's part. As Dean smiled at a biker who bent over to dump his trash, Sam decided not to rule out the last.
3. "Jack. Okay. Let's say I did have a yard sale. How many people in Boulder do you think will buy Epistemology in Ancient Mesopotamia for fifty cents?"
4. "You may play with my hair," Arthur said.
5. "Pick it up!" Arthur actually whacked Merlin's bottom with the flat of his blade. "No cowards on the practice field. I won't allow it."
6. "I shall mock your tonsure," Arthur assured him, although it was a little too soon for lightness and Merlin flinched.
Now which of these is part two from The Care & Feeding of Unicorns? |

Bonus? Looks like it blocks me from going to the mininova.org web page. I can't warn anyone. Except you, of course.

| Fanfic and the Magical Forget Ray, or Things I do when I should be doing homework. |
[Apr. 25th, 2008|09:01 am] |
Recently a gen fanfic writer wrote a anti-slash screed. (Doesn't she know that an anti-slash screed is what got me reading and writing slash in the first place, says Icarus, 150 slashfics later.)
The question came up as to whether or not we should read or rec this gen writer's stories in the future. You know, the usual, "Ew, if that's her attitude I don't want to read her." -- "Me neither."
destina had a really good post/article about this... somewhere... a very long time ago. But I can't find it. Guess I'll have to write my own.
Fanfic and the Magical Forget Ray
Because we post stories to personal networking sites, we know a lot more about fanfic writers than we once did. Instead of belonging to a list or Yahoo Group and reading fics in a vaccuum, we enounter... people.
This can be good. We might like them. We might wonder why they haven't updated their WIP in ten million years -- and reading their Livejournal, we can find out why.
This can also be bad. We can learn that not only do they write gen, they also write slash (oh my). We might stumble across political beliefs we don't agree with, or an anti-slash screed (uh-oh). I know I liked Anne Rice a lot better before she had a blog.
The person who wrote this screed, well, 1) I didn't like her screed, 2) I didn't like the fact that she deleted comments who disagreed with her and left the ones she agreed with, I think that's dishonest, 3) I didn't like how she started banning people who wrote comments she disagreed with, no matter how mild (for example, "Huh. Really? I'm surprised. I think people should write what they like").
That doesn't matter. In my view at least, the personalities behind the stories are irrelevant. The stories stand by themselves. I may not like someone. I'll still read their fic. I'll still recommend it if I think it's good.
Why?
Because my own credibility will be done for as a reccer (okay, I don't rec as much as I used to, but anyway...) if my recs are swayed by my personal feelings about the authors. That is why the Oscars suck. Overblown Hollywood crap wins because the judges like the director and feel he's deserving.
It's hard to forget when someone's been an utter wanker, of course. And here I wanted to quote destina because her response was classy. (I still can't find that post.)
For myself, I use the "Magical Forget Ray."
It works a bit like the S.E.P. field* in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and looks exactly like an oversized hair dryer from the 1950s (curlers not required). You sit under this baby for about 50 seconds, and voila! What a fine new author you've discovered. Never heard of them before. All that's left behind is a vague sense of unease that causes you to never, ever, read their personal posts again.
* = Somebody Else's Problem, the most effective form of invisibility cloak. |

| Crap day, so you get comfort fic. Romance, this time. |
[Dec. 12th, 2007|02:52 pm] |
Like I said earlier, I'm having a miserable day. A depressing day, in fact. No, I don'twant to talk about it. No, there's nothing I can do about it.
I'm going to curl up in a ball and write. And hide. And not come out.
SoI'm giving you: Comfort fic. Soft, fluffy happy stuff.Comic stories.Stories where there's never any doubt of a happy ending. The ones thatmake me feel good from beginning to end. After all, surely I'm not theonly one having a bad day.
Given I oftenwrite to cheer myselfup, there are quite a few comfort (nothurt/comfort) fics in the candybox. Here's post number three. Yes, I think it's clear what motivates me to write.
Happy romance, with at most a teeeeny bit of angst, but only as a seasoning:
Out Of Bounds. Fandom: Stargate Atlantis. John/Rodney. NC-17 Ah, yes. The current massive WIP mention in the AU post. What's not to love about a figure skating romance?
Fools Can Dream. Fandom: Stargate SG-1. Jack/Daniel. PG-13 The non-cloying marriage fic. These are few and far between.
Special Delivery. Fandom: Harry Potter. Ron/Harry. R And embarrassed Ron and Harry take delivery of a new bed. (Set in Martha's Circles of Power universe, with Martha's permission.)
The Albatross. Fandom: Harry Potter. Snape/Percy. PG-13 Told from Hermione's point of view, an unlikely pair quietly run a shope together off of Knockturn Alley.
In November. Fandom: Harry Potter. Ron/Neville. PG-13 Another to not fear the pairing. It's a 100-word drabble and soft and gentle.
Warm, snuzzly Gen:
Self Sufficiency. Fandom: Supernatural. wee!Chesters. PG One of the quiet moments in the Winchester household. John gives a squirming Sam and Dean haircuts.
Honest, Icarus, I don't have time for these long stories. Just give me a boxful of drabbles. |

| An awful day. So, ergo, therefore -- comfort fics. |

I'm having a miserable day. No, I don't want to talk about it. No, there's nothing I can do about it.
I'm going to curl up in a ball and write. And hide. And not come out.
In the meantime, I will give you: Comfort fic. Soft, fluffy happy stuff. Comic stories. Stories where there's never any doubt of a happy ending. The ones that make me feel good from beginning to end. After all, surely I'm not the only one having a bad day.
Given I often write to cheer myself up, there are quite a few comfort (not hurt/comfort) fics in the candy box. I'll do this in three posts.
First, have some porn! This is only my happy, comfy porn:
Early Birds Fandom: Stargate Atlantis. John/Rodney. NC-17 Here's first-thing-in-the-morning, sleepy-happy porn.
Hotel California Fandom: Stargate SG-1. Jack/Daniel. NC-17 How about first time porn out in a boat -- with rimming?
Oh, What A Night Fandom: Stargate SG-1. Jack/Daniel. NC-17 Almost unclassifiable. A wacky SGC party with drunken stripping, bad dancing, and a game of poker played with a deck of tarot cards.
Shy Guy Fandom: Stargate SG-1. Jack/Daniel. NC-17 Pure, unadulterated storage closet porn. Where they could be caught on base for that extra black ops thrill.
Unconditional Fandom: Supernatural. Sam/Dean. NC-17 The rating sort of goes without saying in this context, eh? Hoodoo ritual sex and two brothers razzing each other all the way through it.
Skinny Dipping with the follow up Christmas Lilies Fandom: Harry Potter. Harry/Percy. NC-17 This one is hard to find on archives. Skinny Dipping isn't on a lot of sites because Harry is fourteen years old while Percy is eighteen. Yet it's not really chan since Harry isn't drastically younger or less mature than Percy and has none of the power issues of the genre. Instead it's gentle exploration... and there's that lake and teenage sneaking around....
Two Men On Top Fandom: Harry Potter. Ron/Snape. NC-17 Don't run from the weird pairing. This is probably the steamiest story I've ever written.
I'd rather have comedy, thanks. |

| And the finals continue, so for you I have: Incest. |
[Dec. 6th, 2007|05:42 pm] |
My cat is now demanding that I feed him. He's butting my shoulder with his head. Hard. Hard enough to rock me. (Big cat.)
The wildernessguru has a movie with which to entertain himself, although at the moment he's nursing a mild hangover from going out with friends last night and is trying to rehydrate in the tub. Somehow, I suspect Fight Club is not on the menu tonight.
And now I distract my friends... with incest.
This category is much easier to define than kink. It either is incest, or it isn't. Obviously only the fandoms that feature families tend have incest fics (sorry, Stargate folks, I suppose I could make an effort to write Rodney/Jeannie). But incest comes in many different flavors:
Wincest
Unconditional. Fandom: Supernatural. Sam/Dean. NC-17. You gotta love a fandom whose main pairing is incestuous. How about some playful hoodoo ritual Wincest?
Twincest
Ante Up Fandom: Harry Potter. Fred/George. NC-17. I read one too many twincest fics featuring Weasley Family Trauma and wondered, hey, wait. Where's the twins' iconoclastic humor? The two boys keep daring each other. Line? What line?
And plain old incest
Not My Affair. Fandom: Harry Potter. Ron/Percy. R. How about some accidental incest? With tough implications -- and over a year's worth of clean-up afterward. (I always liked Bill in this.)
Here Again. Fandom: Harry Potter. Percy/Arthur. NC-17. Then there's some parent/child incest with strange power issues.
The Big Secret. Fandom: Harry Potter. Percy/Bill. PG-13. Finally, some incest meta fic mocking how incest is thrown in (from time to time) just for shock value. Yes, well, this time no one's shocked.
Enjoy your boys! Tomorrow: Hmm... should I do AUs, or Romance? |

2007 Fic Output. Do I need a plumber?
Usually, I write about 1-2 stories a month, with a run of drabbles somewhere in the year.
This year, with a massive WIP, my fic production seems ... low.
Out Of Bounds - word count this year ~61,000. Total word count thus far ~92,000. Tanlines & Dogtags No More Quasi-Religious Alien Sex Rituals Liar's Chair The Quick Bird On Hot Sand, aka Civilian Authority
There's been a new fandom sneaking in the cracks, but I've only written two of the dozen or so fics I have in my notes:
Lost in the Temple of Law Self Sufficiency
Then some drabbles in February:
And Liberty For All Betrayal Coming Attractions
I mean, I wrote 61,000 words of Out Of Bounds. Intellectually, I realize it's the equivalent of a dozen average-length 5,000 word stories.
I recognize that I had a death in the family which took a lot of time, energy, and school-and-writing-sapping enthusiasm. But still....
Compare that to 2006 -- and yes, this is normal:
The Stars Look Very Different Today Early Birds Necromancy for the Living Power Napping Compassion For The Enemy First Time A Soldier Last Port Of Call About Ten Days Before The Wraith Attack In The Spotlight (the Unicorn Remix) Colony Atlantis Breeding Ground Traces Through Time
And some February/March drabbles (I drabble in winter, it seems):
Pavlovian Appalling Hurt/Comfort Fic Class A's Double Bed Doo-Wop Pastoral Symphony Nowhere But Up Taking Stock First Christmas
Plus I wrote the first 31,000 words of Out Of Bounds.
But maybe I haven't slowed. Maybe the total word count is the same, and I'm just not used to a large WIP. I could open all those stories and add all the word counts, and compare.
...
That's way too anal even for me.
I've signed up for sga_santa and kicked a Supernatural story out the door to keep myself moving forward. The fics must go on! |
